저는 오페라 브라우저 사용자입니다.

살면서 느끼는 것이 세상 참 넓고도 좁은 것이고, 사람은 참 알다가도 모르는 것이 아닌가 합니다.

누구나 평범해보이고, 그래서 시시해보이지만 알고보면 그 내면 어딘가에는 분명 마이너하면서도 매니악한 구석이 있게 마련이죠.

저도 그런 마이너틱한 요소들을 가지고 살아가는데요. 그 중에 하나가 인터넷 브라우저입니다.

언제 이 브라우저를 쓰기 시작했는지 기억이 잘 나지는 않습니다만, 대학 시절이 아닌가 합니다.

오페라는 아주 예전부터 즐겨찾기나 사이트 계정을 인터넷 서버에 저장해서 동기화시킬 수 있는 기능을 제공하기 때문에 자신만의 소중한 즐겨찾기들을 영원히 유지하고 키워나가며 사용할 수가 있는데, 그 즐겨찾기들로 미루어짐작하건대 대학교 시절이 맞는 것 같습니다. 그 이전에 사용했을만한 즐겨찾기는 안 보이네요.

그럼 제가 2003년에 대학에 입학했으니까, 그 이후 언젠가쯤이겠습니다. 처음에는 느린 컴퓨터에서도 쾌적한 브라우저를 찾다보니 선택하게 되었는데, 탭기능에 익숙해지고, 스마트 다이얼, 오페라 링크, 마우스 제스쳐, 단축키, 비밀번호 관리자 같은 기능들이 하나씩 추가되고 거기에 익숙해져가니까 도저히 다른 브라우저는 쳐다볼 엄두도 나질 않았습니다.

그래서 사람들이 크롬 나오고 크롬에 그렇게 열광을 하던 때에도 저는 그냥 무덤덤했고, 오히려 좀 서글펐습니다. 사람들은 그저 속도와 편의성 등의 이유로 크롬에 열광했고, 저도 일정부분 그에 동의하기는 했지만 제가 보기엔 아무래도 크롬보다 오페라가 더 나았거든요. 사람들이 오페라 브라우저를 알아주지 않는 것에 섭섭했던 것입니다. 물론 지금에야 두 브라우저의 성능 차이가 너무 커져서 동등비교하기가 민망할 지경이기는 하지만, 당시에는 그랬고, 지금도 제 마음 속에서는 크롬보다는 오페라가 더 좋고 더 편합니다. 뭐 예전보다는 크롬의 사용빈도가 늘어나기는 했지만요.(웹호환성/번역 등의 이유로)

아무튼 그래서 감히 평하기로는, 이놈의 브라우저는 참으로 사람을 조련해온 브라우저가 아닌가 하는 생각입니다. 그야말로 중독입니다. 부팅 시키면 자신의 즐겨찾기 중에서도 가장 즐겨찾는 사이트들을 모아놓은 스피드 다이얼이 영롱하게 나열되는 브라우저, 마우스 제스쳐 자체 기능으로 제공되는 브라우저(크롬도 애드온으로 되긴 하더라고요), 어떤 검색엔진이든 브라우저 검색엔진으로 추가할 수 있는 브라우저, 비밀번호 저장 설정해놓은 사이트 들어가서 Ctrl+Enter나 열쇠 아이콘만 누르면 알아서 로그인이 되는 브라우저, 인터넷 동기화로 즐겨찾기와 사이트 비밀번호를 비롯한 각종 정보가 보존/발전될 수 있는 브라우저(크롬도 되긴 합니다만 크롬의 즐겨찾기 UI는 적응이 안돼요).

그런게 오페라 브라우저였습니다.

현재까지 배포된 오페라 브라우저의 최신 버전은 18입니다. 하지만 제가 사용하는 오페라 브라우저의 버전은 12.16입니다. 그 이유는 12.16(프레스토 엔진) 버전 이후로 오페라가 렌더링 엔진을 바꾸면서 엄청난 삽질(?)을 거듭하면서 탈바꿈하는 과정에 있기 때문입니다. 13~17까지 묵묵히 버전업이 되면서 조용히 개발의 단계에 있는 것 같습니다. 제가 사용하는 12.16버전이 안정화된 마지막 버전이고요. 근 1년이 다 되어 가는 것 같네요.(솔직히 좀 지치기도 하고, 무섭습니다.) 

뭐 크게 불편한 점은 없습니다만, 버전업이 안 되는 브라우저를 쓰다보니 웹호환성이 좀 간당간당하다는 느낌도 가끔 들 때도 있고(물론 활동하는 사이트들 중에 90%는 맨날 가는 사이트라 괜찮지만 가끔 브라우저를 바꿔서 들어가야 하는 경우가 생기는 거죠.), 예전에는 오페라 브라우저 업데이트가 뜨면 어떤 새로운 기능이 추가되었을까 설레는 마음을 가질 수가 있었는데, 지금은 그런 이벤트가 사라졌다는 것이 슬프다면 슬픈 점이라 하겠습니다.

비사용자들은 그 정도로 안타깝다면, 구동상 오류가 없다면 베타버전을 깔아서 쓰는 건 어떠냐고 물을 수도 있겠지만, 이미 다들 한 번씩 해봤던 거죠. 베타 버전들을 깔아서 사용해봤지만, 속도만 빨라졌지 오페라의 자잘자잘한 저런 편의기능들이 전혀 반영되어 있지 않은 브라우저였습니다. 혹자는 크롬에 오페라라는 이름만 붙인 거 아니냐고 혹평할 정도였지요. 그래서 다들 베타버전 한 번 깔아봤다가 지우고 다시 12.16을 사용하고 있는 게 지금의 오페라 브라우저의 현주소가 아닌가 하는 생각입니다. (사실, 확신할 수는 없어요. 오페라 브라우저 유저가 워낙 적어서 그들이 대부분 저렇게 쓰는지 확인해보지는 못했거든요. 다만 외국에서 길가다 마주친 동포처럼 이따금 만나게 되는 유저들과 얘기해보면 그들도 그렇게 12.16을 쓰고 있더라고요.)

하여간 그렇게 기다리고 있는데요, 이번에 문득 생각이 나서 오랜만에 오페라를 깔아서, 새로운 엔진을 탑재한 녀석이 얼마나 자랐는지, 얼마나 원래의 오페라와 비슷해졌는지 가늠해보기로 했습니다. (서론이 엄청 길었네요.)

자 일단 보면, 스피드 다이얼이 부활했습니다.

이전 버전에도 있었던가요? 아 있었군요. ㅎ_ㅎ 있긴 있었던 것 같습니다.

그런데 신기한 것이, 오페라 링크가 적용이 되는지 기존에 제가 쓰던 스피드 다이얼이 그대로 들어와 있네요.

좋은 느낌입니다.

그러면 거기에서 즐겨찾기 중에서 원하는 것을 스피드 다이얼에 추가할 수 있도록 해놨어요.

당장은 즐겨찾기 메뉴를 제공할 수가 없으니 임시방편으로 저렇게 열어둔 게 아닌가 하고 생각해 봅니다.

아직 거기까지는 기능추가가 안 된 모양입니다.

그래도 다행인 것은 검색엔진 사이트에 가서 검색창에 오른쪽 마우스 버튼 클릭해서 해당 검색 엔진을 브라우저 검색엔진으로 만드는 메뉴가 생겼고 작동도 한다는 것입니다. 다만 기본 검색엔진으로 적용시킬 수가 없을 뿐이지요. (아 그럼 무슨 소용이지;)

다만, 오페라 12버전에서처럼 마우스 네비게이션 제스쳐와, 마우스 버튼 따닥 클릭하는 제스쳐 모두 사용하려면 설정에서 마우스 제스쳐, 로커 제스쳐 모두 체크해주시고, 하는 김에 고급 키보드 단축키도 체크해 줍니다.(고급도 아니에요) 그래야 비로소 원래의 오페라 같이 됩니다.

아까 말씀드렸듯이 오페라 링크 되어 있고, 기존의 비밀번호도 다 입력되어 있는데,  사이트에 들어가면 열쇠 아이콘 없고 ctrl+enter도 안 먹습니다. 

다만 사이트에 들어가면 아이디랑 비밀번호가 입력되어 있음. 따라서 Login(로그인) 버튼만 누르면 됩니다.

아 그리고, Ctrl+Tab 키를 이용해서 탭 간 이동을 하는데, 이전의 12.16버전에서는 그 순서를 왔다갔다로 할 것인지 순서대로 전환하는 방식으로 할 것인지까지 결정을 할 수가 있었는데, 여기서는 그런거 없습니다. 무조건 순서대로 전환입니다. 이거 은근히 엄청 불편하네요. 단축키가 바뀐건 참겠는데 이건 진짜 심합니다. 의식하지 못했지만 제가 그 기능을 참 애용했었나봐요.

하지만 사실 그런 것 없이도 잘 살긴 했잖아요.

물론 애버노트(evernote), 포켓(pocket), 피들리(feedly), 트윗뎃(tweetdeck) 같은 추가기능들을 쓸 수 있게 해준다면 정말이지 더 이상은 크롬에 의지할 필요가 없어지기는 하겠지만, 어서 빨리 새롭게 완성된 오페라를 만나고 싶은 마음입니다.

하긴 또 생각해보면 예전에는 오페라 링크 없이도, 잘 살았네요. 그렇게 생각하면 지금의 베타버전도 예쁘게 봐줄 수 있으려나요?
